Gotta Get Outta This Town

about

Every band needs a road story or two. Here's mine... a little saga about growing up in the shadow of the Bible Belt, smack dab in the Peach state of the South, dear old Georgia.

lyrics

Gotta Get Outta This Town • [music & words: Spencer Thornton]

Well, I was born with wrinkles - I was born, honey, upside down.
I Looked up at the Doctor and said don't you shine me on.
He said listen here, son, I know how this might sound.
Thatt Dr. slapped my ass and said "You Gotta get out of this Town."

When I was old enough to forge my Daddy's name,
I went and bought the first used car that I found.
Didn't care about the rust, the paint or them worn-out seats,
Long as it took me way, way way Outta this Town.

Down in Brunswick, GA, they got all this hanging moss.
They got bugs so big down there, they could ride em a horse.
And the pulp mills there smell worse than the devil's breath
No reason to stay there, just like that doctor said.

Met a hot-bottle-rocket of a gal in Bogart town
Dazzlin Debra’s what they called her, all around
She turned me inside out and sent my young heart up in flames
Never learned that lesson, happened 10 more times again

They say the Devil he don’t eat peaches, baby
That's cause he ain’t met you
Gonna suck that fruit right outta tha skin,
And honey, oh no no, no - smile right back at you
Well, the Devil he don’t eat peaches
That’s just not what he do
Gonna suck that fruit right outta tha skin,
And honey, smile right back at you

Yeah, in Athens, Georgia that music's loud and sweet.
The whiskey stings and the gals just can't be beat.
You better pull them shutters tight, now draw them blinds.
It might be damn, damn hard to leave all that mess behind.

They say the Devil he don’t eat peaches, baby
That's cause he ain’t met you
Gonna suck that fruit right outta tha skin,
And honey, oh no no, no - smile right back at you

Back in ole Hot-lanta, they're really turnin’ up the heat.
Got a hundred nekked bars down there and this muddy ole creek.
And a happy hour that starts at Noon and goes way past Dawn.
Like the Doctor said, Ya can’t stay in that town too long..

They say the Devil don’t eat peaches, baby
That's cause he ain’t met you
Gonna suck that fruit right outta tha skin,
And honey, oh no no, no - smile right back at you

I recall the day Daddy cussed and Mama she cried,
That Dr. just shook his head and looked me straight in the eye.
He said "I warned you son, and this really ain't that profound,"
"You might never be right if ya don't get your ass outta this town.
No, you'll never be right till ya get up outta this town!
...Outta this town... outta this town... outta this town
... outta this town.
